Winter Garden
This conservatory serves as a kind of extension to the Salle des Fêtes and is used for official receptions as well as for certain press conferences. Built in 1881 at the request of Jules Grévy, the Jardin d'Hiver took the form of a glassed-in gallery with a metal frame. Originally it contained luxuriant green plants, and its walls were covered with trellises.
It has been renovated twice in recent times, by the architect Guy Nicot in 1976 under President Giscard d'Estaing, and in 1984 under President Mitterrand.
Although the Winter garden is no longer a greenhouse, the Orange trees come from the Versailles National Domain are kept there, a reminder of the former use of the premises.
