2012 Olympic Games - Statement made by M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic

2012 Olympic Games – Statement made by M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, on his arrival in Gleneagles.

Gleneagles, 6 July 2005

We have had the results of the International Olympic Committee meeting and, like all French women and men, I am, obviously, disappointed by the Committee's decision.

Nevertheless, I of course want to congratulate, wholeheartedly, London, the London authorities, and later on I shall have the opportunity to convey my warm, personal congratulations to Her Majesty The Queen and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

I would like to thank the French women and men who devoted extraordinary efforts to this veritable campaign to promote Paris' bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

I would like to extend to them both my congratulations and above all my gratitude for those efforts. And finally, and perhaps above all, I should like to tell the amazingly dynamic 2012 Olympic bid team, led by its chairman, the Mayor of Paris, M. Bertrand Delanoë, that they did a fantastic job of presenting, putting together and making a good case for the bid. They did a superb job. The team, led by the Mayor of Paris, has to be congratulated and we must express our heartfelt gratitude to them, particularly to the many sportsmen and -women who worked with them.
