Statement by M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, following the London terrorist attacks.

Gleneagles, 7 July 2005

I would like to express the full horror I feel at the terrorist attacks which bathed the British capital in blood this morning. I would like to express to all Londoners, to all of the British people, the solidarity, compassion and friendship of France and the French people.

I said this clearly, along with the other representatives here today from the world's most important nations, to Her Majesty The Queen, Prime Minister Tony Blair and all the British authorities. These acts are unspeakable. Such contempt for human life is something we must combat with an ever greater and more united resolve on the part of the world's major nations (...).

I of course expressed too, as far as our country is concerned, the French government's feelings of solidarity. I have also given the instructions I deemed useful in the circumstances.
